Hovis Evaluation

I approached this brief initially as a simple merchandise design brief, but I realized that the merchandise aspect would just be more of an outcome, so I decided to turn the brief into a pattern based brief that can be applied to multiple outcomes resulting in merchandise. I enjoyed working with the pattern based design and almost regret not participating in this kind of pattern based brief before as I felt confident designing the initial illustrations and combining them together in a successful way to create a pattern that not only is applicable to outcomes, but can be 'tweaked' and adjusted in shape, form and colour to suit the media it is intended to be applied to. I chose not to screen print the pattern onto the two main outcomes to save time, and chose to use digital transfer paper to print onto the oven glove and tea towel, the printing method worked but it didn't come out as neat as I hoped, by this time I felt it too late to screen print so the pattern was slightly photoshopped on the photographs I took. Overall I felt this was a successful brief and reflects my pattern based illustrations well.

Photos of my final outcomes for the Hovis brief, I'm really happy with how these turned out, but I am aware that it is visable that the print has gone slightly wrong on the oven glove, but I feel it still shows the pattern applied successfully.

For the backing design to my labels, I want to put each of the official Hovis facts from their website onto the backs of these to give a light selection of information towards the audience.

Below heres a proposed design for the label booklet, although I wish to put more information about the Hovis Franchise so I think I will begin to experiment with making each label double sided so that information can be added.

While I have decided on the final pattern and began experimenting with different applications, I wanted to create a tag or a label for the two final applications, the tea towel print and the oven glove print, as before I had created a few examples of ideas for the labels taking images from the pattern itself but I wasn't overly happy with the way they'd turned out, so while backtracking through the initial ideas of my Hovis brief, I have decided to investigation using these original ideas as ideas for labels.

Now the pattern itself has been created,  the application is the next point, although I don't need to psychically make these myself I can imply then!

While I created my patterns to apply to my products, I decided they should be topped off together with a ribbon and a small label, rather than plastic packaging, to keep that homely almost handmade feel. Below, a few ideas for the labels, using images from the pattern itself.

New Hovis Idea

I want to create something more illustration based for the Hovis brief, something more playful and flexible allowing more possibilities for application to various merchandise.

So, using the same idea development as the previous design, I have been thinking of everything relative to bread, the lifestyle surrounding it and the things we can create from it and of-course, eat!

I creating a large pattern based on these things from hand drawn images photoshopped. This is only the black and white original version at the moment, I will experiment with further colours.

I experimented with colours based on neutral tones and 'bread' like colours, I really like the way these have come out and will now like to attempt to print them on an oven glove and a tea towel.

Further Hovis Designs

Here is my initial Hovis design pattern but on a larger scale with increased panels with different "A..is for.."  ideas, I'm not feeling to happy with the design as I personally don't feel it's particularly me, the type isn't exactly strong and neither I am when handling type, I'm finding this more of a type based image and that's not what I intend to create.

The same pattern idea again but experimenting using different  typefaces, I'm losing interest for this idea particularly and want to experiment with something more illustration based that will work as an applied pattern.

Hovis Merchandise Initial ideas

I have decided to create illustration based patterns that I can successfully apply to different outcomes, below a few ideas of where I'd like to apply them.

First Brief; Hovis

The Hovis brief asks for a selection of designs for Hovis based merchandise, keeping both traditional but approaching the current as well " one foot in the past, one foot in the present. " It is intended to be aimed at adults but those with families.

I want to create a range of merchandise relative to Hovis and their image, the bread and the family tradition.

I've had the idea of creating a print pattern that can be applied to a selection of mediums relative to the subject, but the ideas I'm warming to is the idea of a an Oven glove/mit, an apron and a sandwhich box.

The idea behind the oven glove and apron idea is that of the traditional sense, it's homely, motherly, suggested cooking and baking, something that is relevant to the culinary context of bread.

The idea behind the sandwhich box is for the younger generation, bread plays a big part in school pack up lunches and picnics so I think this will be an idea to approach the merchandise to the next generation.
